FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

What is The Great Adventure Bible study?

The Great Adventure is a Catholic Bible learning system that makes the complex simple by teaching the story (the narrative) of the Bible. Every day, more and more people are encountering God’s Word through the methods taught in The Great Adventure.

Who can participate in The Great Adventure Bible Timeline study?

Anyone can participate in The Great Adventure Bible study.  It is basic enough to suit those who haven’t studied the Bible before while at the same time offering ways to go deeper that will challenge the Bible study veteran.

What is the format of The Great Adventure Bible study?

Each two-hour session of the 24 week study begins with an hour of discussion. You sit in a small group with about 8 other people and discuss the workbook questions.  After the discussion there is a large group viewing of a 50-minute DVD by Jeff Cavins on the material. He brings out many interesting facts, and hidden meanings that may be missed by a reader who is not a Biblical scholar.  The session closes with any remaining questions discussed in the large group format.

Who is Jeff Cavins?

Jeff Cavins has taught The Great Adventure Bible Timeline to thousands of people over the past 20 years, both through live and videotaped sessions.  Jeff Cavins developed The Great Adventure when he realized that many did not grasp “the big picture” of the Bible. Though people knew selected stories, they were not able to connect them into a full narrative. His answer was to identify the books of the Bible that tell the story from beginning to end. By reading just those 14 “narrative” books, a chronological story emerges. His popular Bible Timeline program teaches that story in a way that is easy to remember.

What resources are used?

Each participant will receive a Great Adventure Bible study kit that includes:

  • Bible Timeline Workbook (52 pages)

  • Study Set Questions & Responses (196 pages)

  • Custom Bible Timeline Binder

  • Bible Timeline Chart Bible Timeline Bookmark

  • Memory Bead Wristband

  • Early Registration Fee (paid in May 2008): $44 per person; $50 per couple (sharing a kit)

  • Regular Registration Fee (paid in Aug/Sept 2008): $49 per person; $55 per couple (sharing a kit)

What if someone has trouble affording the registration fee?

Please know that we do NOT want the cost to be a barrier to participation.  Contact the rectory for details at 301-253-2027.

What preparation work (“homework”) is there?

The preparation work consists of reading the Bible and answering questions, but don’t be dismayed if you can’t complete the work.  In the words of a St. Paul parishioner who has taken the class before:

“During the 24 weeks there were times we could not read the material or answer the questions and there were weeks we traveled. We still were able to enter into the discussions and missing a week or two did not mean we were unable to get right back into the swing when we returned.  Quickly everyone will find out the only commitment is not wanting to miss the next week.”

Who can I contact if I have more questions?
