The model of leadership we endeavor to promote and use is based on our baptismal call to service. When we are baptized into the Catholic faith, we are commissioned by Jesus to put our lives into the service of others. We are most especially called to service within the community of believers. You should know that through service to the community you are fulfilling the destiny Jesus imparted to you on the day of your baptism. As in everything we do, we must continually seek to understand our purpose and relationship with God through our ministries. It also may take some technical and spiritual training in order to perform the ministry well. That is why every person in ministry should always be in a process of formation. It is the responsibility of the leaders of all ministries to ensure that formation is provided for the people in their group. It is also important that all of the ministries in the parish are harmonized. Although each ministry has its unique purpose, all ministries have to be coordinated so that we are working together for the good of the parish. The leaders of each ministry are asked to be Shepherds in leading their people. The leadership model consists of the following three steps: |
| |
In calling people to ministry, the invitations should offer a way for parishioners to respond to their baptismal call to service. We must devise an action plan and discern what talents we need so that we will be working to fulfill the goals for the parish. Our ministries should be diverse and should include a balance of all types of personalities. |
| |
Formation of volunteer ministers begins with an understanding of the mission of the individual ministry and how it fits into the overall vision for the community at Saint Paul Catholic Church. The leader should encourage spiritual growth through the exploration of the theological basis of the ministry through scripture study, reflection, and prayer. Ministry leaders should take advantage of training opportunities offered by the archdiocese and encourage volunteers to receive training in areas necessary for fulfilling their mission. The leaders should also ensure that volunteers understand the diocesan, parish, or universal norms and policies relevant to ministry. |
| |
Finally, the leaders should shepherd their ministries by making sure that the work being done is fulfilling the specific goals of the ministry and of the parish. The leaders ensure that each member understands his or her role and responsibilities, and coordinates activities among members and between other ministries. Ministry leaders need to set ground rules for productive meetings and for other methods of communication to be used, and are also responsible for obtaining any materials needed. |
